Resolutions? Or intentions?

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you!! Thank you to ALL of you for your amazing support, messages and comments!! I wanted to start off 2019 by sharing some thoughts about resolutions versus intentions…

One of the cool things about New Year’s Day is the sensation of starting fresh, starting over, or ending something toxic and unnecessary from the prior year. Or maybe it’s just the day you cure that wicked hangover from having a dope night out. Either way… it’s weird how one calendar day can do that, isn’t it? I’ve personally kind of always sucked at New Year’s Resolutions. I couldn’t keep them up, couldn’t come up with anything that motivated me enough, or felt like a bum when my perfectionist self screwed up and said ‘fuck it’. I figured I’d just try again the following year, or reasoned that I didn’t need new resolutions anyway.

The truth?

Resolutions are somewhat built to fail. A lot of them start with the premise that not only are you not good enough as you are, but that you need to change to measure up to others. Now don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE believer in improving and bettering yourself. I try and constantly focus on how I can grow & evolve. But very often, resolutions are created in a very black & white mentality (which I very much get sucked into, I must admit) and have an all of nothing attitude from the get go. What happens when you don’t hit the gym 5 times this week? What will you do after you sneak in a morning cigarette before anyone else wakes up even though you promised to quit? For myself, guilt. Always so much damn guilt!! Resolutions never made me feel good and I suspect this might be a shared sentiment with some of you!!

So instead of resolutions, what could be a better option? What truly serves us in creating long lasting impacts on our lives? I think a few years ago when I was knee deep in switching careers to become a professional pilot, I started recognizing that the habits I was forming were responsible for the results I was getting in my life. I was consistently achieving my goals I’d set out through the year, thanks to discipline, prioritizing and habit-forming. What difference did it make if I start January 1st versus March 15th? My ‘success’ was coming more so from my intention and desires rather than setting a new set of harsh rules I’d set out to follow. Why is this so much more effective? Intentions give you space to mess up, start over and continue. They allow room for growth and change and enable you to continuously progress from those original intentions. Say for example you’d like to start losing some extra, unhealthy weight. An intention could start as ‘I will educate myself to lead a more healthy life’. This could then lead you to do research, start moving more, hydrating yourself and making food at home. Eventually, as you become more proficient, allow yourself some days where you don’t do as well as you’d hope, but still continue, your new intention could start being ‘I will improve my cardiovascular ability’, which would then lead you to up your cardio and training regimen. Doesn’t that sound so much better and exciting and awesome?! Intentions help you feel stoked about sharing with others some new tricks you learn, or a new healthy recipe you discovered. Maybe they even encourage your kid to join you in your meditation practice. Whatever the case may be, I feel like intentions help us show our vulnerabilities and acknowledge that there is no such thing as perfection, only continuously striving for progress.

So what will it be? Will you stick to New Year’s Resolutions, or join me in creating new intentions for 2019?

This year, I intend on becoming an entrepreneur, starting my own business. I intend on spending as much time as I can with my family and loved ones. My intentions are to build a life in Calgary, and to explore the Rockies and the outdoors as much as I can. I intend on being as healthy as I’ve ever been, and continue to focus on my mental health. I intend on spreading joy and laughs everywhere I go.
